Across all the projects we run, the opendoor centre welcomes the involvement of over 100 volunteers, without whom our services could not continue.
Volunteers come to us with a wide variety of life experiences and skills that are put to work in supporting and encouraging the people we work with.
How can you get involved?
If you would like to become a volunteer with us we invite you to visit to see what happens and then to complete a volunteer application form. We will explain our Christian ethos and give you information about roles you may be interested in. We provide both induction training and further training for more specific tasks. We look forward to seeing you!
A volunteer’s view
"On a cold day last April, I walked into town to do some shopping and on my way the rain started. Big lumps of very cold rain that must have got into my head because I thought it would beb racing to walk back along the sea front.
As I was getting near to home, thoroughly soaked through and cold, a bedraggled man wrapped in an old duffle coat came shambling towards me. He went past, head down, walking to nowhere.
Two minutes before I might have felt sorry for myself, but then I realised that soon I would be home, into dry clothes with a hot drink in my hand. But where would he be? It had probably never been his ambition to be walking the streets all day long in the cold rain but that is where circumstances had taken him.
Days later I mentioned this to one of the volunteers at the opendoor centre, ‘Oh yes,’ he said ‘that's ... one of our regulars,’ with the result that I soon started to help at the centre in a non-specialist way.
It’s pretty poor if you can’t spare a few hours a week helping to offer some warmth and support to folk who haven’t got the comforts we take for granted.”
