A national scheme administered by Housing Justice, these food vouchers enable members of the public to support people in need by allowing them to buy meals in local cafes but avoiding giving money that may be used to purchase alcohol or drugs. Local participating food outlets are Harbour View Café, Capel’s Fish Restaurant, Minnie’s Eatery and Big Bite takeaway.

Megabites are available from the opendoor centre at £1.00 each. They can be purchased for members of the public or organisations to distribute themselves to people needing them, or payments can be made to opendoor so that we can give Megabites to individuals who come to us seeking help. When anyone receiving Megabites spends them at a participating café, they can choose anything from the menu (food only) up to the value of the vouchers they have. The café then returns the Megabites to us and we reimburse the café using the cash we received from the initial purchase. In this way people can safely be provided with food and warm drinks without the risk that any money given might be used to support drugs or alcohol misuse.

We always explain that Megabite is an emergency ‘safety net’ and should not be relied on as a regular means of support, and we also work with our customers to check their benefit entitlements or financial situation.
